James Patterson: Black Market (1986).

Men hva ønsker terroristene å oppnå?

Hvem ønsker å sprenge Wall Street i luften?

James Patterson and Peter de Jonge: Beach Road. (2006)

Tom Dunleavy has a one-man law firm in legendary East Hampton, but very few clients. He serves the locals. The Beach Road, by James Patterson and Peter de Jongebillionaires and mega celebrities swarming the beaches have their own lawyers on their payroll. Dante asks him to represent him in what could be the Trial of the Century. Tom recruits Manhattan superlawyer Kate Costello to help. She's a tough hire, because Kate is his ex-girlfriend, but she agrees. In their search to find who really executed three locals, Tom orchestrates a series of revelations to expose the killer and what emerges is staggering.

Beach Road is a page-turner of a book, with a lot of twists in the tale. Perhaps even too many twists. Recommended.

Allan Folsom: The Exile (2004).

Hvorfor?

Tom Clancy's Endwar, by David Michaels

This a book that is very different from Tom Clancy's books — it is written by David Michaels on the basis of a video game. So, there background material is a little unusual.

Tom Clancy's EndwarEndwar is intended to be a novel of a near-future (2020) World War III. When the book starts the war have already begun, so this is a tale of one event in the war. It involves the Russians, the Americans, and the Canadians. The fighting takes place in Canada.

It is a wide-ranging and fast-paced story, seen from multiple viewpoints ranging from the President of the United States down to the pilots and soldiers. There is obviously some new technology here (surprisingly little, and we don't really get to learn much about it.

I didn't really like the book much. I felt there were too many viewpoints and too little depth in the characters. Stories with all action sometimes bore me. The lack of understanding of the characters makes it hard to understand why actions take place or take a given form, and makes it hard to form likes and dislikes.

It seems to me from a quick scan of reader reactions to this book on amazon.com that this is a book people either stongly like or strongly dislike. If you're a fan of Clancy's early works, and/or a player of Endwar, I'd suggest going ahead and giving EndWar a try. Otherwise you may not been too happy with it.

Seven Deadly Wonders, by Matthew Reilly

Matthew Reilly is an interesting Australian writer. He writes extremely fast paced thrillers. In Seven Deadly Wonders, teams from competing nations race against each other and time to find the Golden Capstone that once 7 Deadly Wonders, by Matthew Reilly stood on top of the Great Pyramid at Giza.  The Capstone was broken into seven pieces by Alexander the Great, and each of the pieces were hidden in one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Whoever assembles all seven pieces of the Capstone under certain specific conditions will gain absolute power for the next thousand years. The Americans seek this power, but are opposed by an European force. Trying to stop the Americans and Europeans is a small group known as the Nine, representing such countries as Australia, Ireland, and Israel. Mixed into it all is also a group of Arabian terrorists.

Seven Deadly Wonders is about action and plot. Matthew Reilly is good at plots. The plot is Indiana Jones style, with adventure and treasure, races between good and evil, huge rolling stones and  the end of the world as we know it at stake. There is very little character development.  The action is filled with riddles, evil spells, complex codes, chase scenes, bloody confrontations, and  sophisticated hardware.  The presentations of the ancient wonders are creative.

Reilly’s writing style is fast. Few writes thrillers that are as fast paced as him. I must say, however, that I find his writing style a little childish and quite annoying. He uses exclamation points, capital letters, and italics to indicate that something exciting is happening. Especially his childish use of italics, sometimes ever at the wrong spots, is very annoying to me.  Also, the villains come off as pretty one-dimensional and the good guys defy probability constantly. I think you really must be a hard-core action junkie to love this book!

Other books by Matthew Reilly at amazon include The 6 Sacred Stones: A Novel and Area 7.
