IT/Internet/programming - a huge and growing fieldIncreasing coverageWe have made an effort lately to increase our coverage of the vast and growing literatures in this area. We have reviews of books on Web design, HTML, CSS, CSS3, blogging, PHP and MySQL, Python, Ruby on Rails, and more. More reviews will come. And if you know or recommend great books that you would like us to review, or that you would review, in this area, plase let us know. We welcome participation from our users. In fact - we need it. This area is huge and our competence is limited even if it is growing. We use or have used a lot of the books we recommend here ourselves, and try to limit our advice to books that are useful in practice. Recently reviewed books (selected)
Adobe Creative Suite 3 & 4 Web Premium: All-in-One Desk Reference for DummiesThe most useful book of all for people that uses Creative Suite 3 Web Premium from Adobe (as we do). This package has so many programs, with so many useful features, and learning them all is almost impossible The "for Dummies"-manuals that are lumped into one in this book are for Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator, Flash, Contribute, and Acrobat, all of them in the CS3-version. This is a stunning package, and the various programs work together relatively seamlessly. To us, the book has been a great resource to have availble. So far it has helped us fixing problems using Flash CS3, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver. If you've invested in getting these programs, then having books around that can function as a reference manual for them makes sense. Especially when you can get one book that covers them all. That really gives you the value you have earned for your money!

If, like us, you use a WYSIWYG editor to produce your web pages Every now and then you will want to do something that the editor does automatically or easily do for you. Or there is an error on your page. Or you want to do something a little fancy on you site. In all those instances, a good guide to HTML, or simply a reference book with the HTML syntax, can be of great help. Now, hard core programmers would say that HTML is for dummies. Even so, for those of us who want to build and maintain our own Web sites, but cringe at the sight of anything resembling a programming language, HTML 4 for Dummies is the hand-holding guide to help us through those processes. Because many HTML editors do all the site-building work for you, it's strange the authors chose to wait until appendix C in the back of the book to explain why you must know HTML. Still, their reasons for learning HTML are sound, and the advice they dispense is solid. Beyond going through the ins and outs of HTML tags, the book does a fine job of explaining what design elements work and how to avoid common mistakes. The section on XHTML ensures that budding site builders have all the latest tools at their disposal. Whether your goal is to build a simple, text-oriented Web site or one loaded with frames, graphics, and animation, HTML 4 for Dummies will put you on the right track. Don't do the mistakes we did - buy the book before you get into trouble rather than afterwards! Other good HTML books in the "for Dummies"-series: HTML for Dummies
